BASIC HEALTH CLASSES
Ohio's child care licensing requires all early childhood professionals to take the following classes. These classes are not approved as "specialized training", because they are entry-level health classes. Certification for Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention and Common Childhood Illness are valid for 3 years. If you have previously taken a 6 hour class, it will expire after 3 years, and then a 3 hour review may be taken. CPR and Pediatric First Aid are valid for 2 years.

The Mind in the Making Learning Modules for Early Childhood Teachers are a facilitated learning process consisting of 12 modules that are designed to bridge the gap between research and teaching practice. The Learning Modules are intended to add first-hand experience, using the best research on "minds in the making"-that is, on how young children learn best-to other early childhood education, training and professional development experiences.

Step Up to Quality Pre-Requisites

It is very important to understand the PD requirements of SUTQ, so click on the above link to access information provided by the state.

10 Hours of Pre-Requisites must be taken FIRST! Pre-Requisites:
  • Infant/Toddler = Infant/Toddler Guidelines Modules
  • Preschool = Early Learning Content Standards, SIRI classes (language/literacy college coursework completed after 2002 may also be used to meet this pre-requisite)
  • School Age = Basic Afterschool Initiative Trainings (not offered by Mini U)

All of this is also great PD for anyone not involved with SUTQ. They ALWAYS "count" for "ODJFS in-service credit".

Educational Resources Infant Toddler Preschool School Age

Ohio's Infant & Toddler Guidelines (ITG):
Why are these guidelines important? Because early experiences last a lifetime and infancy is the morning of life...

The guidelines are seen as the critical first step to ensuring that all Ohio children, birth to three, have responsive, reciprocal and respectful care. And as a result of that care, children will be ready for both school and life. There are 1,892 days from the time babies are born until they enter school. This 1,892 day journey is remarkable, complex and far reaching. Approximately 150,000 babies are born every year in Ohio: who they spend time with and how they are cared for affects who they will become.

Promoting Social and Emotional Competence:
Mini University is proud to offer 4 modules to address the social-emotional needs of young children. 5 hours per module (20 hours total) of ODE approved credit and SUTQ approved specialized training are available. This research-based professional development is targeted for PRESCHOOL, KINDERGARTEN and SCHOOL AGE teaching staff. These modules were created by the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning.
